Óla! Tudo bem?!
Hello from the Amazon!
Tomorrow, we board the missionaries’ ship to begin our 17-day journey
to the surrounding villages. I am really excited for that and wish my
last year team, especially, were here with me for that. Boo! Don’t
expect to hear anything from me in the next 2.5 weeks. =)
I am doing well and I have a cute little room/bathroom that I call my
own here. I even have my own dog- Baniwa (spelling?). Well, she’s not
really MY dog, but she chills around my room and loves me (I’m sure of
it) as if we belong together. All I’ve been able to give her are a
couple of stale crackers, but she loves it just as much. Oh! I don’t
think I’m sick anymore! Praise God! I do have a little cough, but
whatever who cares haha. I also found out last night that I bought the
wrong water filter. I didn’t buy a filter/purifier combo; I JUST
bought a purifier hahaha. And I can only use it with clear water. Did
you know the Rio Negro (Black River) is called that for a reason… good
thing the girl I am with listened to directions and bought the intense
water purifier/filter. Oba is my middle name, but I guess I messed up
this time. Haha.
Please continue to keep the Amazon and me in your prayers! The
missionary’s wife (Dona Ruté) is feeling sick again and is going to
Korea on Thursday (and not going to the villages with us!). She’ll be
returning some time in August. Please pray that her health would not
get in the way of her amazing ministry here. Please pray also for the
seminary students! I pray that they would love God wildly and freely
(I pray that for myself as well, haha). They have such an amazing
opportunity to be here at the seminary- I hope that they are able to
take it back to their respective villages. That opportunity for them
is off the hook! And I’m sure their people will listen to them more
than some foreign white girl (that would be me).
Let’s see… I’ve been here for 4 days? I have more than 10 red bites
all over my arms and feet. 4 days, 10 bites… if I do my math
correctly, I will return with more or less 450 bites at the rate I’m
going. HAHA. Do not expect to see the same person that left.
Actually, that is my prayer request. That I would not return as the
same person that left. I want to come back, maybe almost literally an
Amazon warrior. Someone who is not afraid of anything- that nothing
will hold me back from sharing the Gospel and being the salt and light
in this bland, dark world. That I will not be bogged down by worries
or anxieties of any sort. Basically I would like to be one radical
person for the Jesus, man! I just finished a book called “Crazy Love”
by Francis Chan and it really challenged me to reevaluate my love for
God. Not that I’m saying I don’t love God, but what shows for it? Is
being here in the Amazon for 6 months going to define my love for God?
What am I willing to give up for God? Shouldn’t it be everything? Is
it really JUST 6 months? I’ve been alive for almost 21 years (252
months)… and if I let these short 6 months speak of my love for God, I
AM IN BIG TROUBLE!
I will be praying the same prayer for you, whether you like it or not!
It is not just the Amazon or the native tribes that need Jesus. I’ll
be praying that you will be the light that those around you need. I
will also be praying that you will live a radical and unheard life for
God, in whatever way God calls you to do so. I’m excited to hear of it
all in 6 months!
I hope you are enjoying your summers and not letting it waste away (I
took 2 naps today………….. haha). Please pray for me as I’ll continue to
pray for you!
Tchau! Boa noite, meus amigos!
